Brian J. Seery

Managing Director – Los Angeles

Brian Seery assists clients on tax controversy and utility tax matters. He has over 41 years of diverse experience in the planning and tax controversy areas of corporate, partnership, estate and gift taxation. He has spent the last 16 years advising one of the country’s largest electric utilities on its tax controversy and other tax matters. His clients have also included public and private corporations, tax-exempt entities, estates, trusts, foreign investors, a large cooperative and a major accounting firm.

Coordinating with WTAS subject matter professionals, Brian helps companies with:

  • Representation before IRS and state/local tax authorities, including coordination of meetings and discussions with examiners from early stages through conclusion
  • Formulation of responses to IRS document requests
  • Performance of analytical and technical research
  • Preparation of tax protests to IRS Appeals Office
  • Litigation support in tax controversy cases

Before joining WTAS, Brian was a partner in a large Los Angeles law firm. He began his career as a trial lawyer for the IRS, eventually becoming a Supervisor of a Tax Court group in the Western Region of the Chief Counsel’s Office.

Brian is co-author of the treatise Tax Court Practice and has taught corporate tax in a graduate tax program.
